The US Supreme Court Blocks Citizenship Question

Immigrant rights advocates are ready for all communities to be counted

 

Today the US Supreme Court ruled to block the citizenship question from the 2020 census. We celebrate a victory for the people and a defeat of an administration that continues to move forward intimidating and racists attacks against our communities.

 

The census determines how more than $800 billion in federal resources are distributed for public services like roads, schools and hospitals for the next ten years. The results are also used to decide congressional representation, arguably the most fundamental tenet of our democracy besides voting.  We will not allow our families, friends and neighbors to be erased during the 2020 Census – we are ready to be counted. Participating in the Census is a demonstration of our collective power!

 

The following statements may be attributed to each advocate as noted:

 

“We are so relieved that even the conservative Supreme Court saw through the administration’s lies and recognized the effort to terrify immigrants and undercount and under-serve communities of color. This administration continues to push a racist and anti-immigrant agenda, but we will continue to build power with our communities to fight back and ensure every single one of us is counted and represented.” – Ana Rodriguez, Colorado People’s Alliance

La Corte Suprema de los EEUU bloquea la pregunta de ciudadanía

Los defensores de los derechos de los inmigrantes están listos para que todas las comunidades sean contadas.

 

Hoy, la Corte Suprema de los EE. UU. decidió bloquear la pregunta de ciudadanía del censo de 2020. Celebramos una victoria para el pueblo y una derrota de una administración que continúa avanzando ataques intimidantes y racistas contra nuestras comunidades.

 

El censo determina cómo se distribuirán más de $800 mil millones en recursos federales para servicios públicos como carreteras, escuelas y hospitales durante los próximos diez años. Los resultados también se usan para decidir la representación en el Congreso, posiblemente el principio más fundamental de nuestra democracia, además de la votación.  No permitiremos que nuestras familias, amigos y vecinos sean borrados durante el Censo de 2020, estamos listos para ser contados. ¡Participar en el Censo es una demostración de nuestro poder colectivo!

Colorado Congressional Delegation: Vote Your Values on the Budget

No more money for family separation, detentions, and human rights abuses

 

Denver, CO- Colorado People’s Alliance issued the following response as more details emerge about the Congressional deal to fund DHS and Trump’s border wall:

 

The Trump administration is successfully holding the nation hostage once again for his border wall and his mass deportation force. We urge the Colorado Congressional delegation to reject this manufactured crisis that tries to pit federal workers against immigrants. We urge the Colorado Congressional delegation to reject a budget that gives over a billion dollars for fencing, and increases funding for ICE to detain thousands more every single day.

“This is money that will be used to push the anti-immigrant agenda even further. This is money that will separate families,” COPA member Eduardo Gomez says. “As a DACA recipient, and as an undocumented immigrant, it is important to me that those who are seeking asylum are treated with respect and dignity and that ICE is not able to expand its deportation force to detain and deport more people like me or my family.”

This administration has proven that they will stop at nothing to steal money from other agencies to fund a border wall and to increase detentions and deportations. ICE and CBP have also proven that they will do nothing to stop the human rights abuses happening in detention prisons and along the border. If our Colorado Congressional delegation stands with immigrants and rejects human rights abuses, we urge them to vote against a budget that will fund more family separation through detentions and deportations, and human rights abuses.

No más dinero para la separación familiar, las detenciones y los abusos contra los derechos humanos

Denver, CO- La Alianza del Pueblo (COPA, por sus siglas en inglés) emitió la siguiente respuesta mientras surgen más detalles sobre el acuerdo del Congreso para financiar la agencia Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) y el muro fronterizo de Trump:

 

La administración de Trump una vez más está reteniendo a la nación como rehén por su muro fronterizo y su fuerza de deportación masiva. Instamos a la delegación del Congreso de Colorado a rechazar esta crisis manufacturada que intenta poner a los trabajadores federales contra los inmigrantes. Instamos a la delegación del Congreso de Colorado a rechazar un presupuesto que otorgue más de mil millones de dólares para la una barrera physica, y ​​aumente los fondos para que ICE detenga a miles más cada día.

“Este es dinero que se utilizará para seguir implementando una agenda anti-inmigrante. Thousands Rally Across Colorado to End Family Separation and Detention

 

Denver, CO.- Today thousands of Coloradans will convene at Civic Center park and across the state as part of a national day of action to demand an end to family separation and detention. For weeks the country has been horrified by the Trump administration’s Zero Tolerance policy which has led to children being torn from their parent’s arms and being kept in baby jails as their parents face criminal punishment and deportation without their children. Immigrants received another blow with the SCOTUS ruling upholding the racist Muslim Travel ban that will also separate immigrant families. Immigrants, immigrant justice and ally organizations, and Coloradans are rallying today to demand the following:

 

Reunite families now. Permanently end family separation and immediately reunify those that have been separated though the ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy. Stop the separation of Muslim families, end the Muslim ban now.

End family detention and the ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy.

  • Children and families deserve due process, not indefinite imprisonment. Children do not belong in baby cages and internment-like camps. Family incarceration is not the solution to family separation.
  • Reverse the Trump administration’s policy that created this crisis and chaos to begin with. Parents should not be criminally prosecuted for doing what all parents do, which is bring their children to safety. This horrible nightmare for families will only end when Trump permanently stops his 100% prosecution policy.

Abolish ICE and CBP. Immigrant families will not be safe from abuse, trauma, and separation until the agencies ripping them apart are abolished.

“Finally, the community is listening to the serious problem of the separation of families that is destroying our families, leaving a mark in their lives that is never erased and a trauma in children who are being cruelly snatched from the arms of their parents and receiving the most cruel and inhumane treatment as they are put in cages as if they were government pets. That’s why today I will be demanding the government stop with this abhorrent practice of creating fear in families. Enough is enough, we need a solution.”

 

Nadeen Ibrahim, advocate in Muslim community said:

“As a Muslim American and daughter of a father that benefited from the Reagan Amnesty, I stand for keeping and reuniting families. Families have no choice but to come here seeking safe haven, and it’s our humanitarian responsibility to grant them that safe haven.”

 

Carlos Blanco, immigrant from El Salvador facing deportation said:

“I am from El Salvador, I have been living in the United States for 10 years and I am in the process of deportation and in September I have my next check-in. I am very afraid because my wife, my 5 year old son, and I are in danger of being separated. If I am deported, I run the risk of being killed by gangs with my wife and son because in my country of El Salvador there is a lot of violence, 2 of my relatives were killed by the gangs. I’m tired of so much injustice, I need a solution now.”

 

Laura Peniche, DACA recipient and mother and leader with Get REAL and Together Colorado said:

“Our families are very damaged by both the abuse and the mistreatment of our undocumented community, both on the border and in the interior of the entire country. It is time for us to get up and fight for our dignity, our health and our lives. Too many people are dying on the border and inside immigration detention centers. It’s enough that they treat us as if we were a threat to this country.”

Miles de Personas se Reúnen en todo Colorado para Terminar la Separación y la Detención Familiar

Denver, CO– Hoy, miles de personas de Colorado se reunirán en el parque Civic Center y en todo el estado como parte de un día nacional de acción para exigir el fin de la separación y la detención familiar. Durante semanas, el país se ha horrorizado por la política de Cero Tolerancia de la administración Trump que ha provocado que niños sean arrancados de los brazos de sus padres y mantenidos en cárceles para bebés mientras sus padres enfrentan castigos criminales y deportación sin sus hijos. Los inmigrantes recibieron otro golpe con el fallo de la Corte Suprema que aprobó la política racista de Prohibición Musulmana que también separará a las familias inmigrantes.   • Los niños y las familias merecen el debido proceso, no el encarcelamiento indefinido. Los niños no pertenecen en jaulas para bebés ni en campamentos de internamiento. El encarcelamiento familiar no es la solución para la separación familiar.
  • Eliminar la política de la administración Trump que creó caos y esta crisis desde un principio. Los padres no deben ser penalizados por hacer lo que hacen todos los padres, que es llevar a sus hijos a un lugar seguro. Esta horrible pesadilla para las familias solo terminará cuando Trump detenga permanentemente su política de enjuiciamiento al 100%.

Ya basta de tantas injusticias, nesecito solucion ahora.”

Statewide Rallies to Keep Families Together

 

Various Cities, CO.- Immigrant families are under attack at the border and in Colorado because of the anti-immigrant policies under the Trump administration. Immigrants, immigrant justice and ally organizations, and Coloradans are taking action to urge elected officials at all levels of government to put an end to these attacks and to protect their immigrant constituents and immigrants at the border. On Saturday, June 30th beginning at 10:00 am, immigrants, over a dozen local organizations, and over 3,000 Coloradans will rally at Civic Center Park to demand immediate reunification of separated families, an end to family detention and Trump’s Zero Tolerance policy, the abolishment of ICE and CBP, and to fight back against the Muslim ban.

ICE Raid Confirmed at Vassar Arms Apartments

 

The 24 hour Colorado Rapid Response Network denounces ICE’s actions; calls on the community to know and use their rights, contact CoRRN to be connected to support

 

Wednesday, May 16th – (Denver, CO) The Colorado Rapid Response Network has confirmed ICE enforcement activity at the Vassar Arms Apartments on South Federal Road in Southwest Denver starting at approximately 6AM this morning. A dispatcher of the Colorado Rapid Response Network spoke to a witness that reported that at least 3 white vans but maybe as many as 6 vans were outside the apartments with at least 8 people lined up outside the vans. Police presence was reported at the scene but has not yet been confirmed. Members of the Rapid Response Network are still working to connect with witnesses of the raid and directly impacted individuals and to determine how many individuals were detained.

 

The network is grateful to concerned residents who called our hotline and is working to connect impacted individuals and their families with support. Anyone who witnessed or was impacted by this enforcement activity is advised to call the Colorado Rapid Response Network immediately at 1-844-864-8342 and press 1 to speak with a live volunteer of the 24 hotline to be connected to a community of support.

 

Ana Rodriguez of Colorado People’s Alliance and the Rapid Response Network said, “We are disgusted by this attack on families in South Denver and recognize that this is part of a larger effort to terrify our immigrant communities. We stand with the families who were targeted today and urge any impacted person to call us so we can immediately connect them to support and resources.”

Redada de Inmigración Confirmada en Los Apartamentos Vassar Arms

 

La Red de Respuesta Rápida en Colorado denuncia las acciones de ICE; hace un llamado a la comunidad para concientizarse acerca de sus derechos y comunicarse con la Red para ser conectados con apoyo

 

Miércoles, 16 de mayo – (Denver, CO) La Red de Respuesta Rápida de Colorado ha confirmado la actividad de Agencias de Inmigración en los Apartamentos Vassar Arms en South Federal Road en el suroeste de Denver a partir de aproximadamente las 6 a.m. de la mañana. Un despachador de la Red de Respuesta Rápida de Colorado habló con un testigo que reportó que al menos 3 camionetas blancas, pero tal vez hasta 6 camionetas estaban afuera de los apartamentos con al menos 8 personas alineadas afuera de las camionetas. Se informa que policía también estaba presente pero aun no esta confirmado. 2018 Legislative Session

The 2018 legislative session is officially over, we fought hard and accomplished a lot. This year we focused on moving forward proactive pieces of legislation that looked to getting us closer to an economy that works for all, not just the wealthy few, to protecting our immigrant and refugee community and working to put people and planet first.

 

HB 1368, the Local Wage Option bill to allow cities and counties the ability to raise their minimum wage at a higher level than that of the state in order to allow wages to reflect the needs in their community, successfully passed out of the House and was unfortunately killed in committee in the Senate. Check out these 2 videos we put out in support of the bill here and here. And our accountability video on the no vote here. Thank you to our partners at the Work Here, Thrive Here Coalition and special thanks to SEIU Local 105, the Colorado AFL-CIO and Good Business Colorado for throwing down with us on this important piece of legislation. Check out our blog post for more details on the campaign!

 

SB 108, which makes the Driver’s License program for undocumented immigrants more accessible through vital reforms, passed the Senate and House thanks to a non-partisan statewide coalition. Thank you to our partners at the I Drive Coalition for working with us on gaining this important victory for our community!

 

Again we had attempts from anti-immigrant legislators to pass legislation against our immigrant community. We are glad we were able to defeat their different attempts on this legislation. Check out media coverage of our organizer Ana speaking against one these hateful bills.

 

Our members made a lot of progress in building towards a just and equitable transition to a renewable energy economy – We want to thank Rep. Salazar and Food and Water Watch for working with us on figuring out what this type of legislation could look like. We are excited to now be leading a coalition of labor, environmental, faith and youth groups to come up with principles for a just and equitable transition. At COPA, we are committed to working to ensure that our communities, not corporations, determine and lead the change to renewable energy economy in Colorado. We will push for legislation that includes and prioritizes the needs of communities that are most directly impacted by climate change and the needs of workers.

 

And thank you for acting against SB 171 and asking your elected officials to vote against corporate interests and to support workers. It’s important that we’re both fighting back against attacks on worker protections as well as advancing a vision for Colorado’s economy that ensures good jobs for all.

 

It was a busy legislative session and we are excited about the momentum we have built around such important issues, we are ready to spend the summer and fall building to come back stronger in 2019 and pass proactive policies that will address the needs in our community.

La sesión legislativa del 2018 ha oficialmente terminado, hemos luchado mucho y hemos logrado mucho. [Boulder, CO]  Ingrid Encalada Latorre’s partner, Eliseo, was detained, out of the blue, by six immigration and customs enforcement agents this afternoon.  Ingrid, her family, and her community will hold a press event at 6:00 pm this evening at Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder, 5001 Pennsylvania Ave.

 

Ingrid is a leader with the Metro Denver Sanctuary Coalition and is part of  national movement for immigrant rights. She claimed Sanctuary at UUCB last month.

We Fight to WIN! #DREAMActNow

Our members are committed to pushing Congress to pass a clean #DREAM Act now because undocumented families can’t wait another day! COPA leaders have taken action since the end of October to push for a clean DREAM Act before the end of the year.

We continue to urge our members of Congress to demand Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority leader allow the bill to come to the floor for a vote and to commit to withholding their vote for the must-pass spending bill that keeps the government open unless a clean DREAM Act has passed.

Through our communities’ continued pressure we have succeeded in pressuring Congressman Coffman to sign the DREAM Act discharge petition, be a leader in pushing his party to pass the DREAM Act before the end of the year and standing up to Speaker Paul Ryan, in getting Congresswoman DeGette to commit to withholding her vote for the budget and using her leadership as minority whip to urge her colleagues to do the same, in getting Congressman Polis’ commitment to withhold his vote, and continuing to make the DREAM Act a priority for Colorado members of Congress. We will continue to fight until we pass a clean DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform!

October 31st – We Want a DREAM, Not a Nightmare!

Our youngest members Karol and Humberto trick or treated at Congressman Coffman’s office and delivered notes asking him to push his colleagues to pass the DREAM Act before the end of the year. One of our COPA families also delivered notes and letters to Congresswoman DeGette urging her to use her leadership as minority whip to ask her colleagues to withhold their vote on the budget until a DREAM Act is passed.

November 14th – Calls for a DREAM Phone Bank

Almost 20 of our members made over 80 calls to their members of congress continuing to push them to pass the DREAM Act before the end of the year, to withhold their votes on the budget, and to be leaders in passing a clean DREAM Act.

November 21st – DREAMers Give Back Thanksgiving Action

Our members Amado and Monserrat joined our allies at 9to5, SEIU Local 105, and Indivisible CD6 to deliver a gift basked to Congressman Coffman thanking him for his support but urging him to stand up to Speaker Paul Ryan to push for a vote on the DREAM Act before the end of the year. The basket included notes and pictures of expired work permits, Driver’s Licenses and job applications to drive the point home that while our dreams don’t expire, our permits do. December 1st – The Clock if Ticking for a Clean DREAM Act

COPA leaders sent 50 letters, notes, drawings, and notes, to Congressman Coffman and Congresswoman DeGette, and gathered hundreds of signatures on a DREAM Act petition. Other leaders made calls, sent emails, faxes and tweets. At the end of the day, a week before the supposed budget deadline, we hand delivered the petition, drawings and letters to remind Congressman Coffman that the clock is ticking on the DREAM act. December 6th – Rally and Mass Demonstration at Washington DC

One of our DACAmented organizers and one of our members traveled to Washington DC for visits with members of congress and a mass demonstration for a clean DREAM Act. They witnessed a historic moment in the immigrant justice history as nearly two hundred Dreamers, faith leaders, teachers, and other allies participated in a mass civil disobedience and risked arrest on the steps of the capitol.

December 8th – DREAM Act Speak Out at the Auraria Campus

Undocumented youth lead a press conference and rally at the Auraria campus to ask if Senator Bennet and Congressman Perlmutter are all in for the DREAM Act and hold them accountable for failing to withhold their vote for the budget unless a DREAM Act has passed. Colorado Immigrant Rights Delegation Heads To Washington, DC To Call On Congress to Pass a Clean Dream Act & Temporary Protected Status Residency Before 2018

 

Colorado — On December 6th, a Colorado delegation of 23 immigrant rights activists will be in Washington, DC calling on Congress to pass a Clean Dream Act and permanent residency for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. This will be in solidarity with approximately 15,000 activists across the country of immigrant communities, leaders and supporters. Congressional DC visits will commence in the morning demanding that Congress pass a Clean Dream Act legislation and protection for TPS recipients before the end of the year. The event will be marked as the largest act of civil disobedience organized by immigrant groups in the history of the movement.

 

Locally in Colorado, during the National Week of Action, Mi Familia Vota, SEIU, The Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, AJUA (Asociación de Jóvenes Unidos en Acción), the Northern Colorado Dreamers United, Padres y Jovenes Unidos, Colorado People’s Alliance, United For A New Economy, 9to5 Colorado, and others will be holding actions to put pressure on our elected officials to pass a clean DREAM Act by the end of the year:

Colorado – El 6 de diciembre, una delegación de Colorado de 23 grupos de derechos de inmigrantes estará en Washington, DC pidiendo al Congreso que apruebe el Dream Act limpio y la residencia permanente para titulares de Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS). Esto será en solidaridad con aproximadamente 15,000 activistas en todo el país de comunidades de inmigrantes, líderes y aliados. Las visitas a Washington DC al Congreso comenzarán en la mañana exigiendo que el Congreso apruebe la legislación y la protección de la ley Dream Act para los beneficiarios de TPS antes de fin de año. El evento se marcará como el mayor acto de desobediencia civil organizado por grupos de inmigrantes en la historia del movimiento.

Monica Acosta, directora de organización Padres & Jóvenes Unidos, dijo: “En 2001, mi miembro del Congreso me aseguró que estaban haciendo todo lo posible para que se aprobara un Dream Act. Ahora tengo 31 años, todavía soy indocumentada, todavía sin miedo, sigo sin disculparme por ser indocumentada y estoy pidiendo al Congreso que finalmente cumpla con todas las promesas que nos han hecho desde hace años “.

Our Citizenship Classes have supported more than 55 students in becoming citizens in 2017. One student, Jose, wanted to share his excitement and his advice to others here.

Today, October 30th, after preparing to become a citizen, I accomplished my goal. I can now say that I am a citizen of the United States. I can vote, and I can fight to improve our community and demand our rights. Before when I couldn’t vote I felt like I was enclosed in a dark room. And now there’s a light that’s brightening the room so together we can continue fighting together.

I came to the United States in 1981 and I received my residency thanks to Reagan’s amnesty. I decided to come to the US to make more money to support my family. I first arrived to California and later in 2000, we moved to Colorado.

I decided to become a citizen now because I saw the situation—the laws can change in any moment and I didn’t want to regret it if they did change. Especially since I had been a resident for 30 years. My wife and kids are citizenships and because of this I also wanted to become a citizen. Today they told me, “now all four of us are citizens.”

My advice for those who are residents and can take the steps to become citizens: Take initiative, don’t let time pass. You don’t want to regret it down the road.

Now I see that as a citizen I have the responsibility to vote, to take action in the community, and to make it possible for good laws to pass so that hurtful laws do not pass. Now being a citizen, I feel that no one can quiet me.

Hoy el 30 de octubre, después de prepararme para hacerme ciudadano, logré mi sueño de hacerme ciudadano. Puedo decir que soy ciudadano de los Estados Unidos. Puedo votar y puedo luchar para mejorar nuestra comunidad y para exigir nuestros derechos. Antes que no podía votar me sentía como encerrado como en un cuarto oscuro. Y ahora parece que la luz está iluminando más y así seguiremos luchando juntos.

Llegué a los estados unidos en el año 1981 y recibí mi residencia por la amnistía del presidente Reagan. Decidí venir a los EEUU para ganar más dinero para apoyar a mi familia. Llegué a California y después en 2000 nos mudamos a Colorado.  

Decidí hacerme ciudadano ahora porque vimos la situación — que pueden cambiar las leyes en cualquier momento y no me quería lamentar después si algo cambia. Especialmente que yo ya llevaba 30 años de ser residente. Mi esposa y mis hijos son ciudadanos y por eso quise hacerlo yo también. Ahora me dicen, “ahora los cuatro ya somos ciudadanos.”

Mi consejo para los que son residentes y ya pueden tomar los pasos para hacerse ciudadanos: Tomen la iniciativa, no dejen pasar el tiempo. No hay que lamentarnos después.

Ahora veo que al ser ciudadano tengo la responsabilidad de votar, tomar acción en la comunidad y hacer lo posible para que se pasen leyes buenas y que no pasen leyes malas. Con la ciudadanía me siento ya que nadie me puede callar.
