Cervezas for Causes: Clean Drinking Water is a Human Right

Cervezas for Causes Colorado People's Alliance

In the last few months we have been at the doors in Montbello and Commerce City engaging community in our water justice work. The majority of those we talked to don’t trust that their tap water is safe to drink. 85 of them have expressed the need to test their water.

A water test costs $107 and is not affordable for the vast majority of those we’ve spoken with. To date, we’ve completed 18 water tests, leaving us with at least 67 more homes to test. However, this number doesn’t include the additional homes we will identify through the doors in the coming month. To date, COPA has stepped in and is paying for the tests, but we will run out of funds soon and so we need your support in paying for the tests.

“When moving into Commerce City years ago, people warned me about the air and water. But we couldn’t turn down the offer to own our own first home so we moved in.

After moving in and finding harsh chemical rings on dishes, cloudy drinking water etc. I decided to get my water tested.

My water was well over the regulations for acceptable drinking water.

Because of my newborn and toddler, I figured out a way to finance a $7,000 water softener system for my house. I am still paying it off, but it’s ridiculous that I have had to spend so much money on getting clean water and that so many other people don’t have the opportunity to burden that expense.” -Janet, Commerce City resident

We need your support in this urgent issue.

Clean, safe drinking water is a human right. We want to test the water to ensure that people have peace of mind, or if needed, we can work together to solve any issues and ensure clean drinking water for all.

Cervezas por Causas: Agua Potable es un Derecho Humano

Cervezas for Causes Colorado People's Alliance

Communities Demand Safe Drinking Water!

18766723_2010649532502374_4770105933742827969_o

Denver, CO  Community members  came together for a Water Justice meeting to launch Colorado People’s Alliance’s Water Justice campaign and to hear from folks in Montbello and Commerce City on the issue of clean and drinkable water.

During the meeting we heard from community members in Montbello and Commerce City as they shared about their lack of confidence in the safety of their drinking water, we heard unacceptable stories from people who don’t drink the water from the faucet as it makes them sick, so they have to rely on buying water in order to have safe drinking water in their homes.

Thirty Montbello and Commerce City leaders then discussed their priorities for addressing the issue, and their vision for a community led process to identify and address failing infrastructure issues. Our community was clear that this is only the first step, and collectively called on Denver Water to test the water and to take steps to address this critical issue. Community members and COPA leaders will continue to hold  Denver and Commerce City officials accountable for this crisis, it is unacceptable that our community doesn’t have access to clean water – we must work to ensure everyone regardless of where they live has  access to safe drinking water.

“Access to safe drinking water is a basic human right that is not being afforded to communities of color and low income communities. It is time that our elected officials pay attention to the water crisis those of us in Montbello have been living for a really long time, we all deserve access to clean water and I expect Denver to act to make sure my family can drink the water from our faucet.”  -Consuelo, Member of Colorado People’s Alliance and resident of Montbello

La Comunidad Demande Agua Potable!

 18766723_2010649532502374_4770105933742827969_o

Water Crisis Convenes Community Meeting

Denver, CO -Colorado People’s Alliance (COPA) member’s canvassed in Montbello and Green Valley Ranch in 2016 and discovered troubling information from the majority of community members–our community does not have access to safe drinking water, and it is making us sick.

Colorado People’s Alliance is convening a Water Justice Community Meeting, for Montbello and Commerce City residents, on Wednesday, May 31st from 6-7:30pm at Montbello Recreation Center to continue to hear from our neighbors around issues regarding the safety of their water and infrastructure, and to ensure our voices are heard in the development of our communities.

We must all have access to safe drinking water, and confidence in those responsible for ensuring the safety and health of our communities. Historically communities of color have been the most impacted by a lack of investment in city infrastructure. As a state, and nation, we must focus investing in repairing and replacing deteriorating infrastructure.

COPA is launching a Water Justice Campaign in Montbello and Commerce City, beginning with tonight’s meeting, to ensure all communities have access to safe drinking water.
